Established in 1147 by Augustinians and rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755, the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Monte dominates the city of Lisbon. The popular neighbourhood built around the historical hermitage holds on to the steep hillside. Accessible via narrow stairs only, many houses have been abandoned over the years.

Three prefabricated bamboo elements are at the heart of this renovation. Designed by GBBN and fabricated locally by two Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture alums, these striking millwork pieces bring warmth to a concrete Brutalist building and help turn it into a place for active learning.

Ridgeview House / THOUGHTBARN

May 29, 2019 Pilar Caballero 0

This new 2500sf house, designed by architectural practice Thoughtbarn, is nestled within a grove of heritage live oak trees on a 3/4 acre lot in the Barton Hills neighborhood of Austin, TX. The wooded, hilly neighborhood was subdivided in the fifties and is populated with ranch-style houses clad in rugged limestone veneers. The clients wanted to build a house that respected the mid-century character of the neighborhood, while pursuing a bold and contemporary approach to design. The outcome is a project which creates strong and often surprising connections between indoors and out, with an angular roof form and black vertical siding that simultaneously camouflage and contrast the house with its leafy natural surroundings.

House Behind the Wall / Mjölk architects

It all started with our clients’ purchase of a house over a hundred years old. The traditional building with a gable roof was at its end. Its stone basement was still in a good condition so we decided to take down the rest of the house and use the stone socle in the basement as a foundation for the new house. Our courageous and somewhat risky plan worked out and today, the clients live in a beautiful, modern house which combines the historical soul of its predecessor and nordic esthetics with a touch of industrial style. What can we say? The road to success is not always an easy one but it’s worth it to put in a little extra effort.

Long and far goes the golden time of the Oporto’s industrial era during the so called 1st Modernity and with it the deurbanization of some parts of the city. It’s legacy has invariably been the malfunction or inadaptation of the big industrial buildings and so they are left to its own tragic fate. This shrinking “rusty” areas are real urban and architectural lab’s waiting for a new life. This fact sets on track a real opportunity to experiment and to explore new tipologies and forms of living that only this kind of space can render.

Pine Flat / A6A

Located on the 4th floor of a nineteenth building, we are surprised at the end of the ascent and it is towards the natural light of day that we must go to access “the pine flat”. The little front door almost stolen suggests a welcoming corridor that sets the tone of wood and space.
