Cake and Breakfast Cafe / Hotels Only

June 2, 2019 Daniel Tapia 0

Cake and Breakfast is a breakfast cafe, located in the 19th-century building in the very center of St. Petersburg. Preserving the interior contrast was the main wish of the customers, so we combined cute details, pink color, and brutality of concrete. There is a bar counter for takeaway orders on the 1st floor and two rooms for a pleasant breakfast on the 2nd floor.

Renovating Town House the Pine / Studio Glume

June 1, 2019 舒岳康 - SHU Yuekang 0

The house we renovating is located in a townhouse residential area built in the 1930s of Shanghai. All the residential houses in this community are in brick and wood construction, and the inside volume and outline of each building are identical as well. There are many excellent buildings preserved in Shanghai during the Republic of China, however, these residential houses of this district are lacking in both design and construction quality. More than half a century passed, each generation of residents in the community has shown a variety of appearances as the internal structure and the facade changed a lot. By redesigning and reconstructing, we want to create a residential building that is independent of the surrounding environment in terms of visual and lifestyle.

Park Avenue Prewar Apartment / MKCA

The renovation concentrated on maximizing the already well- proportioned formal spaces, including a generous entrance gallery, formal living room and dining room; while converting the dark and crowded storage and service areas into functional contemporary living elements. Because the historic layout was quite segmented, MKCA set out to create enlarged openings to increase circulation between spaces. MKCA’s selection of furniture, finishes, and unique art and design objects played a large part in maximizing natural light, visual interconnectivity, and playfulness throughout.

The renovation of a shop into a gallery and jeweler’s atelier explores the idea of room within a room. Located in the ground floor of a middle scale residential building in a residential and commercial neighborhood, the store has two floors: one in the street level and the other in the underground.

Established in 1147 by Augustinians and rebuilt after the earthquake of 1755, the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Monte dominates the city of Lisbon. The popular neighbourhood built around the historical hermitage holds on to the steep hillside. Accessible via narrow stairs only, many houses have been abandoned over the years.

Starter Home Housing / OJT

May 29, 2019 Daniel Tapia 0

Another expanded site for the Starter Home* thesis, the 9th Street development is comprised of 12 homes, with 10 single-family and one two-family, occupying an existing warehouse and vacant parcel. The zoning for this transitioning industrial edge required abnormally large lot minimums for single-family structures. This mandated a tactic that leveraged the density allowed under multi-family developments but organized the site as a single-family assemblage.

Three prefabricated bamboo elements are at the heart of this renovation. Designed by GBBN and fabricated locally by two Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture alums, these striking millwork pieces bring warmth to a concrete Brutalist building and help turn it into a place for active learning.
