The Albert Pérez Baró Library is located in the Montbau housing estate. It was founded in the 1980s by the neighbours themselves as a popular library. Initially it occupied two of three former school buildings which had been constructed in the 1950s during the first phase of the estate. The passage of time and successive modernisation and extension programmes, which had often been barely integrated into the whole, had left the building in a state of considerable deterioration.

The Project P2 combines a city library, a public space with restaurants and residential accommodation within a multi-faceted building complex. As a spatial organisation of urban relationships, it manages both public and private interests. Multiplicity becomes a differentiated, complex unity. The construction of the new City Library within the base of P2 lends extra significance to an important public institution while creating a connection with the neighbouring districts of the city in the form of an attractive urban joint.

Site Location
The renovation project locates along the riverside, the core of teaching buildings area and the centerline of the campus. The warehouse for building materials was in idle or abandoned. The structure of the Chong’er Pavilion nearby is well maintained, but the space is not opened and less active. Besides, landscape resources are barely utilized, thus the whole place is not functioning.

The Dong Minority community of China possess a unique cultural heritage rooted in land and customs.  After surviving hundreds of years, modernization today poses a serious threat to Dong’s identity.
