The house, located in a historic housing complex on Nova York Avenue, had a compromised structure, amidst a flourishing neighborhood.

Nantou Ancient City, also known as Nantou, historically governed areas including Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzhen, Zhuhai, Zhongshan, and Dongguan. It served as an administrative center, a coastal defense fortress, and a hub for maritime traffic and foreign trade in the coastal regions of Lingnan across various dynasties. It is also one of the historical and cultural origins of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. In the early years of the founding of the People’s Republic of China, with the relocation of the County government, Nantou concluded its 1700-year history as an ancient city and naturally evolved into Nantou Village on the site of the old city. Since the reform and opening up, and with the rapid urbanization and industrialization of Shenzhen, Nantou has gradually transformed into Nantou Urban Village.

Peace Park, initially established in 1958 under the name “Tilan Park” in its early construction phase and later renamed in the following year, stands as a historically significant urban park in northeast Shanghai, ranking as the third largest park in the central city within the Inner-Ring Road.

Transformed from its beginnings as a community church and theatre, The Church has undergone a remarkable rejuvenation, emerging as a three-level contemporary dwelling that seamlessly blends modern living with the historic charm of its heritage-listed brick and sandstone façade. Preserving the integrity of the original building, The Church successfully maintains its historic exterior while introducing a modern aesthetic within. The architectural intervention delicately navigates the balance between tradition and contemporary design, employing thoughtful reinterpretation through geometries, material selection, and lighting.

When you open a book, words whirl around in your mind. When you open a window, cars and trains race around from city to city. The inside and outside seamlessly connect when such activities take place. In a world where the trend is toward non-ownership, this architect’s home was planned, surrounded by cherished items accumulated over time while dragging along his past self.
