Gunston Place House / Don Kranbuehl

This renovation and addition project transforms a typical suburban colonial house into a dwelling that is open, naturally day lit, and engaged with the landscape, garden, and sky. Located on a steep forested corner lot, reforming the landscape was a critical component of the project to anchor the project into the hill side and to create a new terraced garden.

Ephemeral Edge / Dean-Wolf Architects

June 13, 2019 Andreas Luco 0

Ephemeral Edge is a weekend retreat and retirement home located three hours north of New York City. As a retreat, the goal of the project was to contrasts the rapid sense of time and pressure of the city and extend the enjoyment and sensuousness of the everyday passage of time that is often highlighted in the open landscape. The sense of extended time is accomplished by taking advantage of the site—a forested hillside which contains a constructed pond and overlooks a distant view. The design is informed by four site conditions: the curving edge of the pond, the torqued banks necessary to construct the pond, the spindly edge of the forest clearing, and the quiet beauty of the distant view.

The renovation project for the Maranhão apartment seeks beauty in imperfection. Natural elements were the starting point, as we tried to create an architecture of soft nuances and of handcraft processes. By elevating the expression of each part, through the appropriation of materials marked by time coupled with new and precious elements, we strived to achieve a work that recalls nature in the abstract.

Monte House / Gávea Arquitetos

June 13, 2019 Daniel Tapia 0

The circumstances inherent to the design of ‘Casa do Monte’ refer to one of the most primordial themes of architecture – the relation between work and landscape. In this sense, because it is located on the top of a mountain, such a relationship can be explored in order to perceive the uncertain boundaries between the horizontality of the landscape and the figure of the architectural work. As of this premise, the structure that shapes the spatiality of housing arises from the positioning of five parallel planes, whose interval between them determines the functional and structural character of the project.
