Reiulf Ramstad’s Exhibition at the Utzon Center Investigates the Local-Global Architect

Reiulf Ramstad Architects will inaugurate a new exhibition series “In the World of an Architect” at The Utzon Center, focusing on “architecture and design created in the tension field between local and global.” The exhibition will consist of a number of spatial installations spread across five rooms, setting out the concept of “Nordic” and appreciating the importance of the architects’ standpoint.

The house is situated on Port de la Selva Bay, on the northern coast of Cap de Creus Natural Park, with its face to the sea and the Tramuntana wind. A building between party walls, the house takes account of the cultural legacy of the location and draws its inspiration from the F. Correa and A. Milá’s Villavecchia House and J.A. Coderch’s Senillosa House, both of them in the neighboring village of Cadaqués, these being examples of a respect for the traditional while incorporating conveniences and features of the modern.

Architecture studio Volta has revamped an apartment within the Marcel Breuer-designed ski resort Flaine, adding a handful of Bauhaus-inspired details to its interiors. Having already gone through a number of renovations, the apartment has now been redesigned by Paris-based architecture studio Volta to more closely reflect its “original spirit”. It’s set inside the Cassiopeia apartment

Studio PARE designs an Orchestra Hall inspired by a 19th Century Music Box

Milan-based Studio PARE has won a competition for the design of a small concert hall in Valsolda, Lake Lugano, Italy. The competition called for a new space to house the 40-person Valsolda Philharmonic Orchestra, with Studio PARE responding with a scheme inspired by the music box: a mechanical device prevalent in the 19th century which could generate melodies without the need for live musician.

On the central area and practically linked to the Arroyo La Cañada, there is a land of 9 x 16 meters to solve a small urban refuge. The intervention bets on the renovation of the existing fabric, in one of the many urban residual spaces that we find in the city. With the objective of making its small contribution in stopping the constant expansion of the city, it takes advantage of the current services and infrastructures, improving and adding value on the built heritage.

6 Schools That Defined Their Own Architectural Styles

Architectural education has always been fundamentally influenced by whichever styles are popular at a given time, but that relationship flows in the opposite direction as well. All styles must originate somewhere, after all, and revolutionary schools throughout centuries past have functioned as the influencers and generators of their own architectural movements. These schools, progressive in their times, are often founded by discontented experimental minds, looking for something not previously nor currently offered in architectural output or education. Instead, they forge their own way and bring their students along with them. As those students graduate and continue on to practice or become teachers themselves, the school’s influence spreads and a new movement is born.
