We were set to design a house for a three-generation family with different lifestyles between the family members. While the grandparents are used to the traditional Vietnamese lifestyle, the married couple and their children are familiar with the modern way of living in foreign countries. The elders in this family have been living in this area for a long time and have a strong connection with the neighbors and interact with their acquaintances daily while their children and grandchildren only travel to Vietnam a few times per year so big spaces to accommodate a large family gathering as well as multiple social events is a must.

In 2021, in the time of Covid-19, they decided to have their first physical store on the street. BBG wanted to discover a new way of interaction with customers and to have a wider audience. Milkbar House / Kennedy Nolan Architects

This project consists of work to a much-loved building typology which is seldom seen these days – a corner milk bar with the Owner’s residence attached – in this case the house is a handsome but unremarkable late Victorian block fronted weatherboard.  Our brief was for a conventional family home, but our Clients had some specific requests – a very large garage and a large productive garden.  Large garages and vegetable gardens can be tricky to get looking good when space is limited.

Rakkestad Culture School is a building in solid wood over 2 floors with a gross area of 774 m2. The cultural school adapts to existing buildings on the square in height and shape and relates to the axis from the road leading down to the main street. Together, the new and existing buildings form a unifying cultural square. The project is made entirely of wood and wood-based materials from inside to outside. CLT load-bearing walls, slabs, and roof are insulated with wood fiber and clad using 100% Ore-pine (heartwood of pine). By utilizing wood-based materials in all of its components the exterior wall construction allows for a dynamic and breathing facade without the use of plastics or other inorganic materials.

Casa Pattaya / makeAscene

Designing a house in the high-density area of the resort town of Pattaya takes a few design techniques from here and there. On one aspect the house is expected to express the laid-back nature of the seaside town, on the other hand, the surroundings are quite cramped with neighbor walls right next to ours. The architect then carefully studies massing placement and utilizes the negative space as the feature element to craft the overall architectural composition.
