This project is a 21st-century reinvention of the ‘collegiate quadrangle’, the basis of Oxford’s academic and urban fabric. The Oxford quadrangle is an 800-year-old pedagogical model that combines student rooms with teaching spaces, organised around landscaped courtyards. Every Oxford College is a variation of this typology. Alison Brooks Architects’ new 6,000 m² Cohen Quad will expand Exeter College’s 700-year-old campus in the heart of Oxford, with undergraduate and graduate living accommodation for 90 students, auditorium, seminar rooms, social learning spaces (The Learning Commons), special collections archive, café, roof terrace, offices and fellows’ accommodation.

Implementation of the New Educational System – The first construction section of the China Academy of Art’s (CAA) Liangzhu Campus Phase Ⅰ in Hangzhou was completed in 2022, followed by the second section completed in August 2023, resulting in a fully operational campus with 180,000 sqm of building area. At the onset of the Liangzhu Campus design competition, participating teams were required to conceive an innovative educational system aligned with socioeconomic development. This educational paradigm, proposed by Atelier FCJZ, encompasses several key facets that have been set into motion: 1. embracing hands-on pedagogy; 2. integrating architectural studies into the general education; 3. prioritizing research-led coursework at advanced levels; 4. encouraging students to organize interest clubs; 5. abolishing conventional departmental structure; 6. pioneering the concept of living and learning intertwined, which impacts campus planning directly.

J. G. Jabbra Library and R. Nassar Central Administration Building / Atelier Pagnamenta Torriani

April 23, 2024 Hana Abdel 0

The Lebanese American University commissioned Atelier Pagnamenta Torriani to design a new Library and a Central Administration building on its Byblos Campus—above the city of Jbeil (or Byblos), where the Phoenicians codified the world’s first phonetic alphabet. The excavated rock and the bare mountain above the site were my first impressions while visiting the Byblos Campus area. Thus, the exposed sedimentary rock and the complex, stratified history of the region became the main inspiration for APT’s design.

Figured Ground – University Sports Arena / Thirdspace Architecture Studio

April 3, 2024 Pilar Caballero 0

Can a building wear two faces, presenting itself with dual fronts and no back? How does it gracefully blend into its surroundings from one angle while commanding attention as a singular force from another? How can opposing elements find harmony within a single structure? These were the inquiries driving the design of the Indoor Sports Arena at KLE Technological University—a quest to reconcile the dichotomies of architecture and landscape, figure and ground, city and campus.

Polytechnic School of Sousse / Atelier Façila – architectures & paysages

March 22, 2024 Valeria Silva 0

At the heart of the urban junction of Sousse, Tunisia, the Polytechnic School of Sousse stands as a symbol of educational progress, subtly blending elements of geographical and urban context into a remarkable architectural design. Designed to accommodate up to 3000 students, this institution sits on a 6800 m² plot, offering a harmonious integration of interior and exterior despite its relative modesty. The central patio, formed by a vast mineral garden, serves as the focal point of the campus, allowing occupants to fully enjoy the outdoor space while fostering social and academic interactions. The corridors, organized around this patio, echo the layout of the great Tunisian medersas, emphasizing the importance of tradition in the design of the establishment.
