April 7, 2023 Paula Pintos 0

The project is located in the center of the village of Rödelmaier in Franconia. After a long period of vacancy, the former farmhouse built around 1900, which in the meantime was slowly falling apart, was converted into a multi-purpose hall with an adjoining bedroom and barrier-free bathroom. The task was to demolish and reuse the dilapidated building fabric in a way that preserved the character of the village setting and street.

The IZTO building, which was designed and built in 1986 according to the administrative needs of the Izmir Chamber of Commerce, holds a distinct position in the urban memory of the city of Izmir along the coastline but was unable to respond to the needs of a new scenario. Through the lens of adaptive reuse, the building was reconfigured with a collection of new demands and scenarios for the design of the innovation center. Through extensive analysis and calculations, structural and technological interventions at different scales were determined and executed to repurpose the building program for more integrated public use.

Location. The campus Paridaens received a distinct identity with its new wing for the school. It is now a visual anchor point and a point of orientation which is emphasized by its fifth floor on the side wall of the building. The river Dijle is now exposed and was given a green bank with a walking and cycling lane that flanks the river within the constraints of the school site. Consequently, the adjacent urban residential area Janseniushof has the possibility to become connected to the city center.

Duchesse House / Notan Office

April 6, 2023 Pilar Caballero 0

NOTAN OFFICE, a Brussels-based architecture, and urban design practice have demonstrated its expertise in transforming industrial courtyards into housing ensembles while preserving the essence of the place. The firm’s architectural strategy involves reusing in-situ elements and structural components, which helps them to create a strong identity that blends past, present, and future. By maintaining the existing DNA of the site, NOTAN OFFICE avoids disrupting the site’s historical significance, and their approach promotes a sense of continuity and respect for the site’s heritage. This technique is highly relevant for urban development projects, as it encourages a sustainable approach to architecture that values a location’s history and cultural heritage.

The Chicken Coop / Arnau estudi d’arquitectura

April 2, 2023 Valeria Silva 0

Chuck, chuck, chuck…  called the landscape of our childhood. And we approached that wild chicken coop. It offered us a roe deer that observed us, a green woodpecker that was blending with the background, and several gardeners that gave us courgettes and onions. And then came the low fog of winter mornings, and the frost. The water flowed through the gutters, and we ate loquats from the tree, fresh and free of charge. And we could not leave. Because we wanted to be part of that landscape, without making noise, with our eyes open and a joyful spirit.

MADE LIM Café / NONE SPACE

A church with 120 years of heritage. As with modern architecture, if it is a 120-year-old building with accumulated time and history, we have difficulty in daring to determine or estimate its value. So, we have planned with the highest priority on establishing a new brand story based on the accumulated time and establishing it as a cultural space, rather than erasing the traces of time and the past or replacing them with completely new ones.
