Sanqingshan Geological Museum / UAD

The designing process began in late spring. After trekking through verdant and thriving mountains, we ultimately arrived at this tranquil valley with an oblique east-west strike. Amidst the undulating hills scatter several residential houses constructed from stone or brick. Behind those houses, we could see cascades of rice fields, above which there were scattered “field stones”, constituting a special and beautiful field scenery… That is where the museum is located. As we got closer, we noticed that the base was higher in the south and lower in the north. Two vague streams were converging among the veins of mountains. A century-old camphor tree was growing vibrantly at the center of the base, pointing its sturdy branches stretching toward the north as if it was resisting the slope of the base. Mountains, fields, trees, and stones composed our first impression of the base.

İşbank Painting Sculpture Museum / TEGET

November 21, 2023 Valeria Silva 0

The main approach of the project can be described as taking responsibility for the three lifespans (Baudouy Apartment, 4th Sigorta Han and İşbank Painting Sculpture Museum) of the building over a century and using this layered potential. The first and main goal is to preserve a historical building with its spatial articulation, atmosphere, materials and patina, while equipping it with the technical needs of today’s contemporary museum. In other words, to propose a new multifunctional and technological core structure for the interior with structural, mechanical and electrical loads, without touching the series of interconnected rooms arranged on the façade and damaging the existing structure of this thick shell. A strong reinforced concrete structure that anchors the preserved part to the ground and contains the exhibition areas answers the main design problem. At the same time, it provides a different type of space for the museum with its high and wide galleries.

Benthem Crouwel Architects designed the plan for the new Museum Arnhem at a prominent location on a green moraine in the city of Arnhem, The Netherlands. The monumental building from 1873 underwent a spectacular renovation: the characteristic historic dome was restored and a unique new extension of more than 1,100 m2 of exhibition space has been created, added to the existing 1,350 m2 in the monument, resulting in a total of 1,935 ‘state-of-the-art’ exhibition spaces. A special feature is the new wing, which protrudes 15 meters over the moraine, making visitors feel like they are hovering above the trees.

The Hamidur Rahman Memorial Complex is located along the Buringanga River in Fatullah. The sprawling grounds are screened from the street by a high wall. The former Hamid family home was built in the 1960s at the site’s western end, directly on the riverbank. In the years that followed, leading to the country’s independence, it was a secret meeting place and served as a hideout for Awami League politicians who could reach the house unseen by boat. After 1971, a cold storage facility was built on the property for commercial purposes, and nine years later, a multi-story textile factory was built. The family home remained unused with all these developments, which led to its dilapidation.
