The office of mcfarlane biggar architects + designers (omb) has designed a private home on British Columbia‘s Bowen Island, that seeks to harmoniously coexist with the natural landscape it is built on.
Based in Vancouver, omb’s challenge was to create their contemporary version of a cabin in the woods, in line with the client’s wishes to “remain only steps away from untamed nature and outdoor adventures”.
The 8-acre site of the Bowen Island House is situated along the northern coast of the island, which is characterised by luscious rainforest and a bountiful undergrowth of salal and fern.
Crucially, the Bowen Island House is intended to blend into its surroundings. Its considered architecture aims to combat the growing trend of over-scaled homes.
This subtly is achieved by positioning the property perpendicular to the rocky, lichen-covered coastline on which it sits.
