Day 13 of the Dezeen 15 virtual festival includes a video interview with curator and architect Joseph Grima, who is advocating for “a new spirit in design” that conserves the Earth’s resources. Watch it live from 3:00pm London time.
“In the face of clear and present danger, we have no choice but to rethink the predatory principles (towards habitat, towards each other) that modern industrial economies are optimised towards,” Grima writes in his manifesto.
“Non-Extractive Architecture is a form of architectural practice which considers the full chain of building’s consequences, taking all possible externalities into consideration.”
Grima believes that creating non-exploitative architecture could help humanity overcome the evolutionary crisis it currently faces.
Writer, curator and architect Grima is the creative director of Design Academy Eindhoven and co-founder of research studio Space Caviar. Before founding the studio, he curated installations for events including the Biennale Interieur in Kortrijk, Chicago Architecture Biennial and the Istanbul Design Biennial.
He has also curated the Non-Extractive Architecture exhibition and research programme at the V-A-C in Venice and edited a book on the same topic.
The Dezeen 15 festival features 15 manifestos presenting ideas that could change the world over the next 15 years. Each contributor will also take part in a live video interview.
