gavin rea proposes housing system of ‘weightless’ prefabricated modules

aiming to introduce style into the culture of prefabricated houses, california-based designer gavin rea proposes ‘tenka’, a minimal, modular solution providing flexible structures to suit different needs. based on a single model, the configurations vary in floor space and balcony layout, allowing — depending on the size — for an extra bedroom or office.

featuring floating stairs and a raised pillar foundation, rea’s tenka seems weightless and allows for the construction in natural locations with uneven ground. as the pieces consist of only two modules, they can be easily prefabricated and shipped to the site with a truck.

made of wood, tenka offers three configurations named M1, M2, and M3 — of 480, 504, and 720 square meters respectively. the large windows and wide balcony available in every option will provide a clear view of the surroundings, be it a lush forest or a blue mountain lake.
