Carlo Ratti and BAF Win Taiwan National Library Competition

Carlo Ratti Associatti and Bio-architecture Formosana (BAF) have won the international competition for the Southern branch of the Taiwan National Library and Repository in Tainan, Taiwan. With the concept of “Library as a Town”, the team created a proposal for a new public building that will accommodate a library, book museum and a joint archives center. Selected among nine competitors, the winning design will be placed in the southern part of Taiwan in the XinYing District. The proposal is made to investigate the role of the library in the future.

Apartment Building Tödistrasse Zürich / ADP Architects

The existing old house was demolished. In its place was built a new building with 16 apartments. The detached apartment building in an urban center position has a mezzanine floor, four regular stories, and one attic story. The mezzanine floor gives the entrance of the house an additional height, which gives the house a certain exclusivity. Three flats per floor are organized around the central staircase. 

Students build giant speaker and human-scale bird’s nest in Studio in the Woods workshops

This movie by photographer Jim Stephenson offers a look behind the scenes at this year’s Studio in the Woods, an annual architecture workshop that invites students to design and build wooden structures in a forest. This year saw six teams of students experiment with timber construction in the Wyre Forest, in the English county of Worcestershire.

De Rijck – Matthys House / Atelier d’architecture Pierre Hebbelinck – Pierre de Wit

While meeting strict criteria for achieving low energy consumption, the building offers an exceptional relationship with its context. The house formed its clearance by responding to the constraints and attributes of the site. Its silhouette is divided into two wings opening onto the rural landscape; it also offers a feeling of spontaneous welcome. It is integrated into the site’stopography, ordered simultaneously by the relief and the poor quality of the soil, thus creating the upper floors with gentle spaces without modifying the natural configuration of the lot.

Looking around, in this village nearby the Xiamen Island, I saw nothing but the barren fields and messy country houses. It has neither the rich and interesting information nor the fascinating surroundings.
