The Glyptothek Museum will showcase the first exhibition dedicated to Santiago Calatrava’s array of sculptures and paintings inspired by Greek Antiquity. Running from June 21st to October 23rd, “Beyond Hellas: Santiago Calatrava in the Glyptothek” traces the architect’s career as a sculptor, highlighting the influence of histories and cultures on Calatrava’s design process.

The Architecture of Virtual Environments: Designing for the Metaverse

For the past couple of years, the metaverse has been gaining prominence, prompting architects to consider its implications for our relationship with the physical environment and how can architecture contribute to this new virtual space. Architecture in the metaverse is no longer a fringe subject, having been embraced by established firms. “The metaverse is where much of the architectural action and innovation will be happening in the coming period,” says Patrick Schumacher. Unbound from restraints such as physics, material properties and construction costs, the metaverse unlocked a new realm of architectural expression. Norman Foster Pledges to Coordinate Design Efforts for the Rebuilding of Kharkiv

Norman Foster met with the Mayor of Kharkiv, Ihor Terekhov, on Monday to discuss the city’s rebuilding, following discussions at the 2nd UN Forum of Mayors in Geneva. Since the onset of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the city of Kharkiv suffered significant damage due to heavy shelling, losing much of its infrastructure, including housing, hospitals, schools, cultural institutions, and historic buildings. The second-largest city in Ukraine is already planning its rebuilding, with Norman Foster undertaking the task of bringing together the “best minds” to envision the city’s future.

Shigeru Ban and VAN Install Paper Partition Systems in Emergency Shelters for Ukrainian Refugees

The war in Ukraine continues, and the number of refugees has risen to 5million, according to the U.N. Renowned for his involvement in humanitarian aid, Shigeru Ban and the Voluntary Architects’ Network have been deploying a paper partition system (PPS) for emergency shelters in Ukraine and neighbouring countries, designed to provide some privacy to the Ukrainian refugees. Since early March, PPS has been installed in Poland, Slovakia, France, and Ukraine by Shigeru Ban Architects and VAN, collaborating with local architects and volunteer students.

Schmidt Hammer Lassen Designs World’s Tallest Residential Timber Building

Danish architecture practice Schmidt Hammer Lassen revealed the winning design of an international competition for the world’s tallest residential timber building. Located in the Swiss city of Winterthur, the 100-metre tall Rocket&Tigerli tower developed in close corporation with the local Swiss architecture studio Cometti Truffer Hodel echoes the 19th-century industrial architecture of the surrounding area through its facades of dark red and yellow terracotta bricks. The project proposes a variety of residential typologies and amenities that are set to create a vibrant neighbourhood.

Counterspace Director Sumayya Vally Has Been Named Curator of Inaugural Islamic Arts Biennale

Diriyah Biennale Foundation recently revealed the curatorial team of Saudi Arabia’s inaugural Islamic Arts Biennale, highlighting the past and present art of the Islamic culture. Among the curators is Sumayya Vally, co-founder of Johannesburg-based practice Counterspace, responsible for designing the 2021 Serpentine Pavilion. Taking place in Jeddah in early 2023, the Islamic Arts Biennale will foster artistic exchanges and further establish Saudi Arabia’s status within the art scene.

Pelli Clarke & Partners Wins Competition for the New Yibin Station Gateway Development in China

Pelli Clarke & Partners, in collaboration with Sichuan Provincial Architectural Design and Research Institute (SADI), won the international competition for the new Yibin Station Gateway Development masterplan. The project responds to the city’s prospective status as a significant transportation hub, with two new high-speed rail lines planned to intersect in Yibin, making the city a crossroad between Western China’s four major urban centres. The design takes inspiration from the neighbouring bamboo forest and its rhizomatic root system, focusing on resilience and interconnectivity.

Foster + Partners Reveals Design for JPMorgan Chase’s New Headquarters in New York

Foster + Partners revealed the design of a new skyscraper at 270 Park Avenue that will host JPMorgan Chase’s New York headquarters. The 60-story tower is set to be the city’s largest all-electric tower with net-zero operational emissions powered by renewable energy sourced from a New York State hydroelectric plant and is designed around high standards regarding wellness and hospitality. The project’s morphology creates extensive ground-level outdoor space with green areas and a public plaza., accompanied by various amenities geared towards the neighbourhood’s residents.

MVRDV’s Arboretum Masterplan In Almere Hosts Once-in-a-Decade Horticultural Exhibition Before Becoming a New City District

The international horticultural exhibition Floriade Expo 2022 opened to the public yesterday on the site of MVRDV’s arboretum masterplan in Almere. The concept features an alphabetical library of trees and plants arranged into lots on a rigorous grid across the 60-hectare site. The masterplan was conceived as a framework for the Expo, and at the same time, as a blueprint for a sustainable city district, given that the park will be transformed into a new residential area after the event. Held every ten years and running for six months, the Expo showcases the latest innovations in the field, from nature-inclusive agriculture to a sustainable pilot home made from 93 per cent recycled plastic.
