Renovation of Piazza San Michele / VPS Architetti

August 11, 2019 Pilar Caballero 0

The design for Piazza San Michele, the main public space in the one of Cagliari’s “central peripheries”, was based on the site’s main geometric and spatial elements: The original Via Abruzzi, which crossed the square until the 1970s; the church axis; and the square’s oval space determined by the positions of the major trees, in particular the pines. The street and the axes intersect the oval to define the main access paths that, in turn, determine the tree-lined sectors that form the square’s edge.

New City Hall in Nancagua / Beals Lyon Arquitectos

July 12, 2019 Daniel Tapia 0

The new City Hall in Nancagua, a small rural town in Central Chile, aims to create a space able to accommodate various public situations and events. Because of its location, close to an old public park and to several historical buildings, it also makes possible the recovery and enhancement of the local heritage, both natural and manmade. The project, winner of a public competition, focuses not on the construction of an iconic volume, but rather on the creation of a memorable and public void that effectively connects the city with the valuable, but previously overlooked the public park.

Originally built on 1915 and inspired by sea pools in Lisbon, the Carpa Olivera was a social center on Olas Altas beach in the Historic Center of Mazatlan. Many famous people of that time gathered and socialized here, and it was a must for every tourist. In 1954 it was devastated by a hurricane, leaving it in abandonment, but with time people came to use the pool. In the year 2004 it had a remodeling that soon fell into neglect and vandalism.
