December 2, 2019 Pilar Caballero 0

The proposed intervention for the new Diocesan Archive had as basic assumptions: restructuring the outside space of the property in order to host the new needed installations for the operation of a new and structured research center for the community and the contextualization of the property in the street urban ambience. The proposal seeks to highlight its contemporaneity and, at the same time, respect the urban morphology of the site it occupies.

Stevenson School Library / Studio O+A

“Books In the Running Brooks…”. Because most learning, research, and information storage now takes place online, stacks stocked with books are no longer the definition of a library. At Stevenson School, O+A’s design removed shelves of unused books to make way for the hands-on, collaborative forms of learning and study that now shape a student’s life. Essential books remained as a reminder of where the larger culture comes from and to give students access to texts needed for their classes, but the aim of the design was to open up space and delineate its functions.

WISTIK Library & Kindergarten / TOOP architectuur + Steven Vandenborre Architects

Eksaarde, a village part of the City of Lokeren needed a new recognition point. A place to gather. A place where one could meet. The program: a kindergarten and a library. Close to the villages’ center, family houses, schools, an elderly home, the site rather feels like a park. We wanted to create a project, very subtle embedded in the park. A building that feels like it was already there but above all, one that was open to the public. Even more, a building that creates opportunities to meet. The program of the building feels at first sight very contradictory. At one side the library. A place that is rather quiet but open. At the other side the kindergarten. Very strictly regulated but noisy and playful.

Luxembourg Learning Center / Valentiny Hvp Architects

One of the major objectives of the university library project was to create, in a rigid volume predefined by the industrial framework elements, an open and welcoming space in the spirit of a Learning Centre. Large open space volumes, accessible to the public, more than 100 meters long, are thus presented on five levels, giving the impression of flying plateaus around the ore silo, at the foot of blast furnace B. This silo, kept in good condition, is a reminder of Belval’s industrial past, but also of the country’s know-how and innovation capacities, which were originally based on the “Möllerei”. The old structures have been cleaned, reinforced and repainted, thus preserving all traces of the building’s past activity.

Self-service Library Station / Architectural Services Department

The architectural design concept of the library station is based on the traditional Chinese bamboo writing slips, which were the main media and writing medium in China with a deep cultural and historical reference. Together with modern spatial composition, use of environmentally friendly materials and barrier free design, a comfortable and harmonious library station is created. The bamboo-tubes ceiling and bamboo-strips screen are few of the design features that bring the traditional reading atmosphere to life.

This hybrid library/affordable housing project in Chicago combines a 16,000 square foot branch library with a 44-unit affordable apartment complex for seniors. The two-story library element is slid forward on the site to the street to foreground its public nature, while the residential block, which hovers above, is set back from the street.
