Photographer’s Studio / Derrington Building Studio

March 10, 2019 Andreas Luco 0

The Photographer’s Studio strikes a balance between a voluminous working space, the City of Austin’s zoning regulations, and a shared appreciation for expressive form. This project began with a simple need for a studio in the corner of the photographer’s backyard. Zoning setbacks and tree protection rules quickly eliminated the option to build a separate structure, resulting in a building addition that juxtaposes a typical Austin house with a fresh new form.

Conceptually this project both reconciles and celebrates the found condition of the cottage/site/street/suburb. Conceived of as ‘PetArchitecture’, it acts at multiple scales within the constraints of a minimal footprint and rear siting. At the scale of the suburb it speaks to the eclectic and fun nature of the ‘West End’ that the clients are ontologically living within – simultaneously quirky, humble, bold, green (and on the left side of the house!).

February 18, 2019 Daniel Tapia 0

Boxen, the new studio gallery at ArkDes, the Swedish Centre for Architecture and Design in Stockholm, is a robust machine for fast-changing, experimental exhibitions. It is a structure that can be used in its entirety—inside and out, from bottom to top, by both exhibitors and audience—as a tactile, physically engaging experience. The blank canvas of the white-box interior contrasts with an external surface of chain-link wire mesh, designed for informal exhibition display effectively doubling the exhibitable wall space.
