About the context. The multipurpose room is located in the back of a company that provides integrated services. This company plays an important role in the recycling of waste and remnants of the main automotive companies in the country and has a strong relationship with sustainability and environmental care. Faced with the opportunity to recover an abandoned space, the project arose from the need for a place where the work team can eat, rest and carry out activities like training or business talks. The donut effect” – a familiar occurrence in Austrian communities. It slowly draws traffic away from town centers via local suppliers on the periphery, leaving the center to die out. Our new community center, however, is fighting back against the donut effect. Developed out of the row of houses at the main square, this new heart of the village opens up as an inviting and welcoming gesture. Citizens and visitors alike will not only feel welcome but also feel encouraged to make use of the building. A strong symmetry to the main square adds gravitas and meaning to the self-evident gathering place. The rotation of the structure and the resulting opening of the site, along with the orientation of the main entrance onto the main square, expresses an ultimate gesture of welcome. encouraging visitors to explore and discover.

Edegem’s new timber community center strengthens the local community. A new regional hub for culture and leisure, Edegem Community Center and library forms the ‘Missing Link’ that strengthens the social fabric of the village. Built with environmental responsibility at its core, two pavilion-like volumes, built from cross-laminated timber, seamlessly connect to the heritage site and enhances the 19th-century garden as an oasis for reading and reflection. Designed with and for the community, the building features a flexible interior that adapts to their changing needs. The building reinvents the library for the digital age. By offering spaces not only to read offline, but also for digital media, all kind of courses and for community groups to rent meeting rooms. There’s also a book café and a staircase that acts like a small presentation space. The building is more than a place for books. It’s a place to meet, learn, relax and get inspired.
