AD Classics: Gallaratese Quarter / Aldo Rossi & Carlo Aymonino

February 23, 2020 Luke Fiederer 0

As the dust settled following the Second World War much of Europe was left with a crippling shortage of housing. In Milan, a series of plans were drafted in response to the crisis, laying out satellite communities for the northern Italian city which would each house between 50,000 to 130,000 people. Construction the first of these communities began in 1946, one year after the end of the conflict; ten years later in 1956, the adoption of Il Piano Regolatore Generale—a new master plan—set the stage for the development of the second, known as ‘Gallaratese’. The site of the new community was split into parts 1 and 2, the latter of which was owned by the Monte Amiata Società Mineraria per Azioni. When the plan allowed for private development of Gallaratese 2 in late 1967, the commission for the project was given to Studio Ayde and, in particular, its partner Carlo Aymonino. Two months later Aymonino would invite Aldo Rossi to design a building for the complex and the two Italians set about realizing their respective visions for the ideal microcosmic community.[1]

Gathering, building a house, and living there together is like a dream of our life. Be that as it may, we are witnessing more and more houses are built for various purposes over time. Nevertheless, it is too difficult to gather all potential occupants so as for them to build a house by reflecting all opinions and needs of themselves. Particularly, any house where many families gather to live in downtown must be built as a multi-household housing type which is commonly called a “villa” in Korea. These houses often boil down to monotonous buildings by the land size, circumstances, or construction cost. For all that, “Mo-yeo-ga,” (which means a “Gathering House”) is to fulfill the romantic dream of a house in downtown according to the family constitution, lifestyle and budget without excessive construction cost involved.

The tradition of architecture, and many persist in it, insists on conceiving it as the construction of space. Thus a house will always be the optimal coordination of the different spaces that inhabit requires. But a house is also, especially if we think that the family has been established for a long time and what was now proposed was a “definitive” installation, a significant number of objects that make up the domestic universe. What will be, in this second look, architecture? Or can the architecture be configured based on the objects?

Within a rectangular landscape, and taking as a fundamental premise the orientation, the house is settled in such a way so as to show the strong intention to close itself from the front side, seeking privacy and the best views.

Old warehouses, new promenades, bridges crossing the Fleets, new architecture and the Port of Hamburg – the conversion of the former port precinct to create HafenCity is taking shape. This is where the KPTN has been created. From the outside you can hardly detect its functional diversity – but behind the facades there is a sophisticated mix of urban housing, a hotel, a top class cinema, a public underground car park, restaurants and shops.

Thought as the continuity of the “chaperon vert” quarter in Gentilly on the outskirts of Paris this housing project brings the right proportion of green and built spaces in a direct dialog with the neighboring buildings. The project prioritizes pedestrian use and sustainable transportations (Bikes, seaways, pedestrians, etc…) in continuity with the “aqueduc de la vanne” pedestrian walkway that goes through the city of Gentilly.
