restaurant in thailand by sher maker is covered with charred wood lamellae

‘sripayong’ is a family restaurant renovation project in chaingmai, thailand, that transforms the business from the previous generation into a modern destination. to organize the original space, thai architectural studio sher maker has designed an extension covered with charred wood lamellae and connected with the existing kitchen.

the architects have designed a new boundary system, where the wooden translucent wall is lifted above the ground — to limit the view and filter sunlight, while, in the meantime, the guests can still see through from inside. ‘walls need to be the restaurant’s boundary, but they have to make the visitors comfortable,’ explains the team. the core of the building is a steel frame, which is used to lift both the roof and the lamellae suspended above the floor.
